New talent Sample Answer will release his 4-track debut EP ‘Good Boy’ on July 24th through ACP Recordings/Essential Music.

Brand new artist Sample Answer has only recently settled in London since leaving hometown Dublin, but he’s been hard at work writing and recording his debut EP, the 4-track ‘Good Boy’, out July 24th on ACP Recordings/Essential Music. Combining diverse influences ranging from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Jay-Z and Tyler The Creator the twenty year old virtuoso melds hip-hop, classic pop songwriting and authentic urban storytelling with unique flair on this debut.
Recorded in South London with producer Hugh Fothergill (Bipolar Sunshine, Ed Sheeran, Kodaline, Nitin Sawhney), EP ‘Good Boy’ begins with the eponymous lead single, which reveals Sample Answer’s rebel nature at heart, conflicted with his good intentions: “Oh Lord, I’ve done some nasty things today…And I’m trying to be a good boy”. His distinctive vocal range is showcased throughout – from effortless, lilting melodies to raspy improvisations that see out the EP’s opening track.
But Sample Answer, real name Maurice O’Connor, doesn’t like to limit himself to one style, and uses second track ‘Proud’ to comfortably exhibit his skills as a rapper as well as a singer. With a style and pace all of his own, his urban sensibilities enable Sample Answer to switch between laidback lyrical flow and vocal melodies with ease.
EP closer ‘No Need To Stay’ again introduces another string to Sample Answer’s bow: stark, candid and intimate songwriting – with a warm and delicate performance. Tender acoustic guitar picking and inimitable vocal nuances are backed only by a small string section – all of which sits in striking contrast to the gritty urban beats and intensity shown earlier in the EP – evidence of Sample Answer’s natural capacity for making any song his own.
Sample Answer has just announced his residency at The Rose & Crown in London’s Kentish Town. The nights will provide a platform for up and coming local artists as well as an opportunity to witness Maurice perform his new tracks live in a truly intimate setting before the release of debut EP ‘Good Boy’.
